IT Knows IT (“we”, “us”) is a free AI knowledge engine for IT professionals, operated by Basilios P. This document explains what we collect when you use www.it-knows-it.com, how we use it, and the choices you have.
What we collect
- Questions you submit. When you ask a question through the search bar or chat, we process it on our servers to retrieve relevant sources (Microsoft Learn, Apple Support, community forums) and to generate an answer via Google Vertex AI. Questions may be stored in aggregate form for quality measurement.
- Account information. If you sign in, we collect only what your identity provider (Google) shares with us: your email address and display name. We do not receive or store your password.
- Analytics events. We record anonymous usage events (searches, clicks, feedback thumbs-up/down) to improve answer quality. Events are keyed by an opaque session identifier, not by personally identifying information.
- Technical data. Standard web logs (IP address, user agent, request path, timestamp) are kept for security and abuse prevention for up to 30 days.
How we use it
- To answer your question and retrieve authoritative sources.
- To improve retrieval quality, answer ranking, and UI flows.
- To detect and prevent abuse, rate-limit excessive traffic, and secure the service.
- To communicate service-level changes if you have an account.
What we don't do
- We do not sell your data to third parties.
- We do not use your questions to train large language models.
- We do not place advertising cookies on the site.
Third-party services
We rely on a small set of infrastructure providers to operate the service. Each processes a limited subset of your data under its own privacy policy:
- Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run hosting, Cloud SQL persistence, Vertex AI / Gemini inference).
- Cloudflare (DNS, CDN, DDoS protection).
- Google OAuth (optional sign-in).
- Microsoft Learn MCP and the public YouTube Data API v3 (retrieval of official Microsoft and tutorial video content). These providers see only the query text, not your identity.
Your choices
- You can use IT Knows IT without signing in.
- You can request deletion of any account-associated data by contacting us at the email address below.
- You can opt out of the optional analytics ping by using a browser privacy extension or enabling Do Not Track; we honor DNT signals.
Children
The service is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
